Donald Trump’s re-election to the US Presidency and a Republican majority in Congress opens the door to significant economic reform. US’ participants have priced the positives, but missing from their calculus is the threat tariffs pose to growth and inflation as well as the risk to US’ competitiveness from lost competition. Interestingly, at the same time, the market remains downbeat on China despite its success with reform and trade, and just as authorities there show a willingness to deliver meaningful stimulus. 2025 is a year when politics and the evolution of trade will matter a great deal for the global economy and financial markets. In this update, we investigate the risks and opportunities for Australia.
