It was a privilege for BT to showcase a new generation of up-and-coming designers competing for the coveted BT Emerging Fashion Designer Award at the fifth annual BT Runway for Success event.
The Award was launched with the goal of supporting emerging designers in this highly competitive environment by arming them with financial advice and mentoring to prepare their business for success.
The finalists reminded us that their business is not all about the glamour of red carpets. Winner of the Award Kacey Devlin says the challenge for her was about courage, bravery and a sense of maturity. “Working with suppliers in the industry they want to know that you take your business seriously and you see long term vision.”
Other tips from the finalists are:
- Make sure you are surrounded by people you can trust
- Understand the importance of cash flow
- Don’t start your business straight out of college - make mistakes for someone else first.
Whether you are a designer, a builder, or chef, your core skills may be in the trade rather than running your own business. Define your future by talking to a financial adviser.
