BT Margin Lending_Online

With BT Margin Lending Online you can borrow, invest and trade online. You can monitor and manage your margin lending portfolio online and also reduce your costs because the interest rate will always be at least 0.20% lower than the standard BT Margin Loan.

You need to open a BT Margin Lending online loan linked to a Westpac Broking account to take advantage of these benefits:

  • Multiply investment returns
Borrowing money increases the size of your investment – so you can magnify the returns on your investment.  Of course, a gearing also magnifies potential losses.
  • Straight Through Processing (STP)
Buy and sell shares online via STP and avoid the potentially expensive lag between order and execution.
  • Diversification
With more money to invest, you can spread it across more investments and reduce investment risk.
  • Tax benefits
Interest on a margin loan is normally tax deductible, which may reduce the tax you pay on investments and other income.  Plus, you can prepay the interest for up to 12 months in advance.
  • Lower cost
Online trades cost less than a phone trade, making margin lending even more cost effective.
  • Minimum loan
The minimum loan is $20,000 or $2,500 with a regular gearing facility.
  • Fees
No application fees for individual applicants. Interest and transaction fees apply.

Interest rates

You can choose to pay either variable or prepaid interest.  The variable rate is paid monthly in arrears; the prepaid interest rate can be set for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.

Prepaying interest before the end of the financial year can help you manage your cashflow and may help bring forward a tax deduction for when you need it (the next financial year?).

Lending ratios

A lending ratio or loan-to-value (LVR) is assigned to each investment in your loan portfolio. The lending ratio is the percentage of the investment’s market value we will lend you.

BT Margin Lending will lend between 35% and 75% of the market value of over 1,400 listed securities and managed funds.
