Nominate a beneficiary

<<Back to ‘Maintain my retirement plan’ options

Your BT pension can be paid to a person of your choice if you die before you collect it.  To ensure this occurs in accordance with your wishes you need to nominate a beneficiary.

There are different types of nomination:

  • Binding death nomination
Binding nominations ensure your benefit is paid to your nominated beneficiary in the event of your death, and cannot be overruled by the trustee(1). For a binding nomination to be valid, your beneficiary must be a dependant or legal personal representative at the time of your death. A nomination is only valid for three years from the date in which it is signed(2) but can be reviewed at any time. All you need to do to make a nomination binding is to have it witnessed and signed as outlined on the form.
  • Trustee discretion
You can nominate a dependant to receive your benefit on your death but if your nomination isn’t binding, the Trustee isn’t obliged to follow your wishes. The Trustee will still take your nomination into consideration, but must consider all known dependants (whether nominated or not) in their decision.
  • No nomination
If you haven't nominated a beneficiary, your benefit will be paid to your Legal Personal Representative for the benefit of your Estate.
  • Automatic reversionary (for BT Lifetime - Flexible Pension only).
You may elect to establish a reversionary pension. A reversionary pension is a pension that automatically continues to be paid from your flexible pension account to your nominated beneficiary, following your death.

Your nominated beneficiary must be your spouse, de facto spouse, child, someone with whom you have an interdependent relationship or another person who is financially dependent on you at your death. You can only select a reversionary pension when you commence your flexible pension. If you wish to change your nominated beneficiary you will be required to commute and recommence your pension, as selecting this option may impact the calculation of your annual deductible amount.

Complete the form below to nominate a beneficiary - don't forget to include signatures from two witnesses if you wish your nomination to be binding.
