What are 'register on' and 'register off'?

'Register on' refers to shares or managed fund units held on your behalf by a nominee such as BT (Queensland) Pty Ltd.

In this instance, share registries and fund managers will only accept instructions from BT Queensland (on your behalf).

For example:
BT Queensland (Ken Smith account)
L9 2 Chifley Square Sydney NSW 2000

'Register off' refers to shares or managed fund units held in your name (or the name of a joint account holder).

Share registries and fund managers will only accept instructions from the named investor.

For example:
Ken Smith
(Investors personal address)

Listed shares

Listed shares are normally held in a CHESS holding in your name or the name of a third party to your account. These shares are shown as register off.

Occasionally, listed shares will be held by BT (Queensland) Pty Ltd as your nominee. These share holdings are shown as register on. For example shares may be held in this way if they are not CHESS eligible, or subject to ownership restrictions or corporate actions.

Managed funds

Investments in managed funds made using your margin loan will usually be bought in the name of BT (Queensland) Pty Ltd as your nominee.

You remain the beneficial owner of these investments. These investments are shown as register on.

Managed fund or share investments lodged as security to the loan using an Australian Standard Transfer (PDF 50KB) form will be shown as register on.
