Who we are

BT has been helping Australians create, manage and protect their wealth since 1969 and today is one of Australia’s leading providers of superannuation, investment and insurance products.

Who we are

BT (BT) has been helping Australians create and manage wealth since 1969 and we are proud of our heritage and position as one of Australia’s leading investment companies.

We provide investment, superannuation and retirement income products, investment administration services and insurance solutions. Our products and services make it easier for financial advisers to help their customers achieve their financial goals.

Our reputation has been built by helping our customers become better investors. We do this by showing them how to take control of their superannuation, how to invest in their future and how to grow and protect their wealth.

We are owned by BT Financial Group, the wealth management arm of The Westpac Group.

Our history

In 1969, BT Australia, a subsidiary of the American merchant bank, Bankers Trust, and then known as Ord BT Ltd opened its doors. Funds management was established as a core operation from inception.

In 1976, Ord BT Ltd became fully owned by Bankers Trust Company (New York) and in 1978 Ord BT Ltd changed its name to BT Australia Ltd.

BT Asset Management Limited became BT Funds Management Limited in 1994 and in 1998, Deutsche Bank announced a takeover bid for Bankers Trust Corporation in November. The following year, Deutsche offered BT Funds Management for sale.

The US based Principal Financial Group acquired Bankers Trust Australia Group in August 1999, which included the funds management operations.

In 2002, Westpac acquired BT Financial Group from the Principal Financial Group. Westpac floated the investment management division (now known as BT Investment Management and listed on the ASX as BTT) of BT Financial Group in late 2007.

Today BT joins Asgard Wealth Solutions, Advance Asset Management, Westpac Financial Services, St.George Financial Planning, Securitor, Licensee Select and Magnitude Financial Planning as part of the BT Financial Group – Australia’s largest wealth manager.
